Ranking and Rating the best Com Tam restaurants around the city

It’s no surprise that Com Tam is one of the most well-loved Vietnamese foods. You’ll see it on most Vietnamese menus worldwide. It’s a delicious piece of meat marinated in a secret sauce and served with steamed rice and a golden dipping sauce.

 However, with so many mixed reviews and countless websites claiming, “This that Com Tam is the best” (because the restaurant sponsored it), it’s hard to choose a restaurant that’s actually good. So, in this article, we’re going to be reviewing popular Com Tam hotspots to give a brutally truthful review without any sponsors and no filter.

Com Tam Nguyen Van Cu

We went to the Iconic Com Tam Nguyen Van Cu. Its located in District 7, on one of the busiest roads in the city. It’s recommended by locals and a dozen food review websites, so of course we had to try it out. Our first impression was the delicious aroma of barbecue grilled ribs, which they cook right outside. They ensure all their food is cooked fresh and hot. 

Pro tip: Make sure to avoid rush hour since it’s going to be packed full of people.

They serve a variety of versions of Com Tam, but we came here for their classic version. We got the Grilled pork chop with an extra fried omelet on the side, and needless to say, it didn’t disappoint.

Food description

The serving size was big and quite decadent, the pork chop was very well marinated, perfectly grilled with plenty of burnt edges and not dry at all. The broken rice was fresh and steamy, and the dash of tomato sauce at the bottom really brought out the flavour of the dish, and the golden fish sauce on the side tied it all together perfectly. Personally, I would give this place a 9/10 based on taste. But now let’s talk about some other factors, starting with price.

Pricing

This place is definitely on the pricier side, for 170,000 vnd you can get the classic dish without the egg, and for some, this may not be an ideal place. However, for me, I will surely eat this again just not occasionally. I would give it a 5/10 for pricing. Another factor is service.

Service

The service in this place was mediocre. Due to the popularity, sometimes you’ll have to wait for quite some time. Sometimes I come in on rush hour, and it would take them 30 minutes; however, when I came during non-rush hour, everything was really quick and still so delicious, so I would give the service a 6/10

Overall, I would say this an 7.5/10 after some calculations.

Com Tam Mai (100 Vinh Hanoi)

In my opinion, this place is honestly such an underrated spot to get delicious Com Tam( and it’s not often talked about with locals too, surprisingly… ). This place is located at 97Vĩnh Hội, P. 4 (Đối diện 100 Vĩnh Hội), Quận 4, TP. HCM. It’s also available on Grab and Shopee Food, which is where I usually purchase it, or you can visit the restaurant itself.

Food description

My first impression of this was that it had a burst of flavours. The serving size was quite generous, with much more rice than needed. The meat itself wasis very good, it’s perfectly marinated, it’s cut to the point where it's not too thin, and I’ve never had an experience where the meat was not moist, which is a common problem I see when eating com tam. The crispy egg ties everything together perfectly with a jammy egg yolk and crispy edges as seen in the photo. The fish sauce is slightly sweet and spicy and. I would definitely eat this every day if I could.

Pricing

Surprisingly, with such good food quality, the prices are relatively cheap, with the classic com tam with eggs set at 55,000 VND.

Service

Personally, I have never been to this place since I mostly order it on Grab, however, through various of online reviews the service has commented that it is without a doubt a wonderful place to eat and dine in and it is a truly fun experience to see it made right in front of you.

Overall I would rate this place a 9.3 out of 10

Com Tam Ba Ghien

Now, a review on com tam could not be made without including the famous 2 time Michelin Starred restaurant. People from all around the city know about this place, making it all the more exciting.

Food description: The first thing you’ll notice is the mouth-watering smell of the pork being grilled fresh outside. Personally, I feel like the serving size was really overwhelming, like this meal will at least feed people ( NO KIDDING ), so it’s perfect if you want to share it with friends. In terms of flavour, it’s quite similar to the Com Tam Nguyen Van Cu, but the flavour over here is quite good. You can really tell that they took their time to grill this because the flavours were very smoky, barbecue-y and umami, so if you’re into that, this place is definitely for you.

Pricing: For a classic pork chop with eggs, rice and vegetables on the side, this will set you back 97,000 VND, which is honestly not that back because of the size of this meal, so overall the price is quite suitable.

Service: Now the service here was also a bit mediocre, nothing special from a normal restaurant, but there were a bunch of staff on hand, so the time from order to plate was quite quick.

Overall, I would give this place a very high 7.9 out of 10
